Blown-in Insulation

“Blown-in” or “blown” insulation can significantly improve the insulation value in your unfinished attic, preventing heat loss through the roof of your house and helping to keep your home energy costs under control. Blown fiberglass and cellulose are the two materials used for blown insulation. They have similar R-values, and both are considered “fluffy” insulation.

How Is Blown Insulation Installed?

These two materials use the same method for installation: A blowing machine is kept outside the house, and the insulation is blown through a flexible hose by a skilled technician, who can direct the insulation to exactly where it’s needed. Installation is relatively fast.

Insulate Hard-to-Reach Places

Another benefit of blown-in insulation is that it can be blown into concealed areas, such as wall cavities. Instead of ripping out walls to insulate, then having to re-build the walls, with blown insulation you simply make a small hole in the wall and blow the insulation in. The hole can be patched very easily, and with a lot less expense than building new walls.

When you upgrade both your air sealing and insulation, you could reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 40 percent, making the one-time investment highly lucrative in the long run. Unfinished attics and crawl spaces can be air sealed and properly insulated for an affordable price and save you thousands of dollars over the years on heating and cooling costs.

Benefits of Blown-In Insulation

There are many benefits that come with blown-in insulation. The key benefit of blown-in insulation is that in can be blown directly on top of your existing insulation, provided your insulation is in good condition, with no moisture or mold spots. Here are some of the other benefits to blown-in insulation:

  • Saves Energy – The blown-in material works to lock in cooler indoor attic temperatures in the summer and can prevent indoor air from leaking out. Blown-in insulation can effectively seal the tiniest of cracks and crevices, enhancing your home’s HVAC system‘s performance. Some homeowners have reported to saving upwards of 30% on energy costs and the installation usually pays for itself in less than 5 years.
  • Fire Protection – The cellulose and fiberglass materials of the insulation reduce the risk of fire by creating an airtight seal. This seal keeps air from flowing through small spaces and stoking existing flames.
  • Reduced Condensation – The airtight seal can also keep condensation and moisture out of your attic. This means it is more difficult for mold and bacteria to grow in your home, preventing rot and moisture from damaging your roof.
  • Soundproofing – Another benefit of the airtight seal is the soundproofing effect. The airtight seal works to mute indoor noise from one room to another. This sound buffer can also work to reduce outdoor noise leaving a more peaceful and comfortable feel for your home.
